This "WebMaster's" Adventure in

 Website Design & Development

You know for someone who spends an awful lot of time surfing the web, you would have thought I should have had some clue about how it works.  It was only after I "had an idea" of something that I would like to sell on the Internet, that my ignorance became blatantly obvious!  What seemed like a fairly simple thing to do in the beginning; turned into quite a challenge.  There is a lot of technical stuff about putting up a website that had me feeling, Duh!  I am too smart to feel so stupid so I do what I always do…  Search for the best information and tools to help me with what I was resolved to do.

As it so frequently does… that original idea changed but became something much bigger and better.  It became about something that I truly love, is what I have become obsessed about, what I feel is my purpose – Helping other families that are going through the same struggles and challenges to heal their sick child(ren) and even themselves.

I am going to share my inside tricks about this website.  I want to share the… who, what, where, when, how I developed this site.  Maybe if you “have a good idea” this page might serve as a small how to or give you the tools that helped me design, build, market, and manage this website.

Knowledge… Educational… Idea Inspiring…

I stumbled onto this free download from an e-zine my father sent to me.  This is the product that really started me on this journey of sharing my experience, knowledge, frustration and triumphs.  **FREE!-Download** Affiliate Masters Course.  It is well written and is a light and fun read.  I can just about guarantee that after reading this book you won’t be able to ignore what you learn.  You’ll think about what you learned about making money on the Internet every time you surf the web!  As a matter of fact, you may have so many ideas of how to make some money on the internet that it is hard to stay focused on one idea!

After you have read your free Affiliate Masters course, you’re also going to want to read how to Make Your Content PreSell.  This one isn’t a freebie but is ridiculously priced at $9.95.

Article Automator is a cool tool that helps you find relevant content quickly and easily.  It allows you to quickly convert those relevant articles to web pages.  This will help you build some depth and quality of your website.

Traffic On Steroids does a number of cool things.  It aids you in getting your site picked up by search engines.  This is absolutely crucial to your success on the Internet.  In addition, it allows you to rotate your content.  The cool thing is it remembers and can track what someone saw last.  Yahoo uses this type of technology by giving you a different “front page article” each time you visit.

Web Hosting:

Originally I chose SiteSell as my hosting, design and marketing company.  However, I was under the impression you could have as many domain names as you wanted.  This is not correct.  Initially, I started another website but when I starting writing the pages, they all sounded like they were more helpful for an autism site than the current one I was developing.  I knew an autism website was “somewhere in my future” but I quickly started to realize it is really where my heart was and is.  Any way, to make a long story longer…  I tried to establish a new domain and I was given a message like, a domain has already been established with that order number.  It then prompted me to buy again.  I ultimately decided to abandon that first website and go with another hosting company for this site.  To be honest, I was a little disappointed with their templates.  I also thought some things were almost too user friendly and some things not enough.

However, much to the program’s defense, I must say what I learned about building a site that people want to visit and how to get the traffic was well worth the price.  It was only from this education that I felt confident enough to venture to check out another hosting and design company.  Furthermore SiteSell is the only Internet hosting, design, and marketing solution that I know of that provides Proof (click here to see) that it helps their clients deliver.  The main reason for this is the training they provide.  They really help the people who are new fumble their way through.

However, IPowerWeb is very affordable at $7.95 per month and includes a free domain name if you sign for a year.  They also have great templates for designing.  It includes so many add-ons and plug-ins that will allow you to do just about anything with your website that you can imagine.

The most impressive thing though, was the rankings that IPowerWeb got me from the start based on Alexa data.  Alexa gives you important statistics for how sites rank in traffic, popularity, speed, related links, tracks average number of pages people view on the site, allows you to review and compare sites. Download your free Alexa Toolbar here.   This is without a doubt one of my most favorite web tools.  In addition to all what I’ve already said about Alexa data, the toolbar includes a popup manager, a Google search bar, and an Amazon button.

I use Front Page to help me design my pages.  After spending a lot of time viewing the pros and cons of Front Page and Dreamweaver (the two most popular HTML editors), I ultimately chose Front Page.  This was for 2 reasons.  The first reason was simply the difference in price.  The second reason I went with Front Page is I already use Microsoft office software.  I felt like I could probably do more straight out of the box.  From what I understand Dreamweaver is really good at doing very impressive flash with very interactive designs.  Maybe one day I’ll invest in Dreamweaver and will want all the bells and whistles.  But I realize that it isn’t necessarily what visitors to my site will care about!
